The early ferry is the quiet one. Most people sleep in the lounge chairs, a few stand outside with coffee, and the water is the colour of wet slate until somewhere past the halfway point.
I loaded a roll of HP5 and decided to push it to 1600, mostly because the light was so flat that anything slower would have meant shooting wide open the whole way. Pushing adds grain and contrast, and on a morning like that the contrast is welcome.
Silhouettes against the rail. People in thick coats leaning into the wind. The wake behind the ship, which turns pale green for a few seconds before it disappears.
Anything inside. The lounge light is a mix of fluorescent tubes and grey daylight, and even pushed film struggled with it. Next time I will just put the camera away indoors and enjoy the coffee.
Flat light is not bad light. It just asks you to find the shapes yourself.
